ANTI-PROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY OF PHEOPHORBIDE-A EXTRACTED FROM CARPINUS BETULUS 'FASTIGIATA' LEAF

Abstract: Since centuries, natural compounds from plants have been used as medicine. The flowering plant Carpinus of Betulaceae family is well known for its role in cancer treatment. The current study was designed to further explore the anti-cancerous activity of pheophorbide-A isolated from C. betulus 'Fastigiata' leaves. To this end, the effect of pheophorbide-A on cell proliferation rate of SW116 colon cancer, U-2OS bone sarcoma, B16F1 mouse melanoma, and BIU87 bladder cancer cells was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. The results showed  that pheophorbide-A exhibited the higher anti-proliferation effect on B16F1 cancer cells under illumination than under dark. The anti-proliferative effect of pheophorbide-A on different cancer cells ranged between 53 and 72% inhibition. These results show a potential for C. betulus 'Fastigiata' derived pheophorbide-A in the management of select cancer types.
